Rainy Day Adventures: Top Things to Do in Queenstown When the Skies Are Gloomy
Queenstown, known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures, is often a playground for thrill-seekers and nature lovers. But what happens when the weather turns, and rain sets in? Fear not! There are plenty of fantastic indoor activities to keep you entertained and make the most of your time in this beautiful town. Here’s my guide to enjoying Queenstown even when the skies are grey.
Explore Art Galleries and Museums
Start your rainy day by exploring Queenstown’s vibrant art scene. Take a leisurely stroll through the Queenstown Arts Centre, where you can admire the works of local artists and catch rotating exhibitions that inspire creativity. If you’re up for a short drive, Lakes District Museum in nearby Arrowtown is a must-visit. Dive into the area’s fascinating gold mining history and check out unique artifacts that tell the stories of yesteryear. It’s a wonderful way to soak up culture while keeping dry!
Treat Yourself at a Spa
Rainy days are perfect for a little self-care. Why not pamper yourself at one of Queenstown’s luxurious wellness centres? Enjoy a soothing massage, a revitalizing facial, or any treatment that calls to you. Many spas boast stunning views that create a serene atmosphere, even when it’s pouring outside. My personal favourite is the spa at Millbrook, where you can indulge in a relaxing massage followed by a dip in their outdoor hot pools—pure bliss!
Indoor Adventure Activities
If you’re still in the mood for adventure, check out indoor activities like the Queenstown Escape Room. Gather your friends or family and put your problem-solving skills to the test as you work together to solve puzzles and escape within the time limit. Alternatively, try your hand at indoor climbing at the Queenstown Climbing Centre, suitable for all skill levels.
Take a Scenic Drive
Sometimes, the rain can enhance the beauty of the landscapes. Consider taking a scenic drive around Lake Wakatipu or to Glenorchy. The lush greenery and dramatic skies can make for breathtaking views. There are several excellent viewpoints along the way, but our personal favourite was the Bennetts Bluff Viewpoint with its incredible panoramic views of the lake. Pack some snacks, crank up your favourite playlist, and enjoy the ride while exploring the stunning scenery from the comfort of your car.
Catch a Movie
If you’re in the mood for some entertainment, why not catch a movie at the local cinema? The Queenstown Cinema or Dorothy Browns offer a range of films, from the latest blockbusters to independent films. Grab some popcorn and enjoy a relaxed afternoon or evening watching a film while staying warm and dry. We recently went to Dorothy Browns on a rainy afternoon and had the most relaxing time with a glass of wine and cheeseboard.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
Queenstown and Arrowtown have a range of unique boutiques and shops to explore. Spend some time wandering through the town’s shopping district, where you can find everything from outdoor gear to locally made crafts. It’s a great opportunity to pick up souvenirs, gifts, or simply treat yourself to something special.
Unwind at the Onsen Hot Pools
For the ultimate relaxation experience, head to the Onsen Hot Pools. These luxurious hot pools offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and are perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. Located in Arthurs Point, just a quick 10-minute drive from town and across from the bowling alley, it’s an ideal retreat. You can book a private pool and enjoy a soothing soak while listening to the rain outside—it’s a tranquil experience you won’t forget. Plus, treat yourself to a rejuvenating facial or a relaxing massage while you’re there, making it a complete pampering session.
