Nestled in the breathtaking Southern Alps of New Zealand, Wanaka is a gem that captivates visitors year-round. With its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and a plethora of outdoor activities, there’s a perfect time for everyone to experience the magic of this charming town. From summer hikes to winter snow, there’s a perfect time for every type of traveller. Here’s my thoughts on the best times to visit Wanaka and what you can expect during each season.

Summer: The Thrill of Adventure (December to February)

Weather: Summer in Wanaka is warm and inviting, with temperatures averaging between 20-30°C (68-86°F). The long days and abundant sunshine create an ideal backdrop for outdoor activities.

Activities: If you thrive on adventure, summer is the season for you. Picture yourself hiking the stunning Rob Roy Glacier Track, where the views of glacial rivers and towering peaks will leave you breathless. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the local trails are diverse, catering to both beginners and seasoned riders. Lake Wanaka comes alive in summer, offering a plethora of water sports. You can paddleboard or kayak on the serene waters, or simply relax on the beach, soaking up the sun. Don’t forget to take a scenic flight to truly appreciate the majestic landscapes from above!

Events: The Wanaka Beer Festival is an annual celebration of craft brewing, held in early December. Featuring a diverse array of local and international breweries, attendees can enjoy tastings, food pairings, and live music. Be sure to try the locally brewed b.effect lager, this was definitely a favourite of mine!

Autumn: A Photographer’s Dream (March to May)

Weather: Autumn in Wanaka brings mild temperatures ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F). The air is crisp, and the changing leaves create a picturesque setting.

Activities: As the days get shorter, the landscapes transform into a canvas of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. This is the perfect time for photography enthusiasts to capture the stunning fall foliage against the backdrop of the lake and mountains. Take leisurely strolls along the lakefront or bike through the scenic vineyards, where you can sample some of the region’s finest wines. Autumn is also an excellent time for hiking, as trails are less crowded. Explore the various tracks, including the easy but beautiful Blue Pools Track, where the turquoise waters are simply mesmerizing.

Events: The Wanaka A&P Show in early March is a must-visit. I attended last year, and the agricultural show showcases local produce, crafts, and livestock, providing a glimpse into the region’s rural culture. It’s a great family outing filled with fun activities for all ages, the apple bobbing contest is a must do! Mark your calendars for the Wanaka Wine and Food Festival in late March. This delightful event celebrates local cuisine and wine, with tastings from various wineries and delicious food stalls. It’s a fantastic way to experience the flavours of the region.

Winter: A Snowy Wonderland (June to August)

Weather: Winter blankets Wanaka in snow, with temperatures typically ranging from -2 to 10°C (28-50°F). The crisp air and snow-covered mountains create a magical atmosphere.

Activities: For snow sports lovers, winter is paradise. Wanaka is just a short drive from premier ski resorts like Cardrona and Treble Cone, where you can hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, there’s something for everyone. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, consider a cross-country adventure at the Snow Farm. The stillness of the snow-covered trails offers a peaceful escape. After a day of adventure, warm up in the Kai Whakapai pub with a plate of their delicious nachos.

Events: Don’t miss the NZ Mountain Film Festival in July, where inspiring films about adventure, exploration, and the great outdoors are showcased. It’s a must for any outdoor enthusiast and a great way to connect with like-minded adventurers.

Spring: A Season of Renewal (September to November)

Weather: Spring in Wanaka is refreshing, with temperatures ranging from 5-20°C (41-68°F). The days grow longer, and the landscapes burst into colour.

Activities: As the snow melts, spring reveals a lush, green landscape. It’s a fantastic time for hiking, with trails reopening and wildflowers blooming along the way. The area around Lake Wanaka is perfect for leisurely walks or picnics, and fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the fresh start of the fishing season. The iconic Wanaka Tree, a popular photography spot, blooms beautifully in September, attracting many visitors eager to capture its beauty against the backdrop of the lake and mountains.

Events: Be sure to check out local markets and events celebrating the arrival of spring, where you can enjoy artisan crafts, delicious food, and live music. The Queenstown Marathon is held every December and could be worth popping over the hill if you are up for the challenge!
