Your guide to the Best Wineries in and around Queenstown

Nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, Queenstown and Arrowtown are not only known for their stunning scenery and outdoor adventures but also for their flourishing wine scene. The region boasts a variety of wineries that offer exquisite tastings and picturesque vineyard views. Whether you’re a devoted wine enthusiast or just looking for a cosy afternoon, here are my top picks for wineries that capture the heart and flavour of Central Otago.

Located just a short drive from Queenstown, Gibbston Valley Winery is one of the most iconic wineries in the region. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by stunning architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens that beckon you inside. With a focus on their Pinot Noir, their wines are a must-try. I particularly enjoyed the guided tours that offered insights into their winemaking process, but the highlight was exploring their impressive underground wine cave — the largest in New Zealand!

Mt Rosa Winery, located in the stunning Gibbston Valley near Queenstown, is celebrated for its premium wines and warm hospitality. This boutique winery specializes in small-batch production, focusing on exceptional varietals like Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, crafted from their own vineyards. We particularly enjoyed their Pinot Noir and pairing it with the tasty charcuterie board make for a delightful afternoon, one I would highly recommend. On the cold days we suggest trying their famous mulled wine recipe, it’s a huge hit with the locals.

Just a stone’s throw from Lake Hayes, Amisfield Winery is celebrated for its organic practices and exceptional wines, especially its Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines. I was lucky enough to indulge in a fine dining experience at their restaurant, where the seasonal menu pairs beautifully with their wines. The unique cellar door experience, where you can taste wines straight from the barrel, was a highlight that felt intimate and special. The stunning vineyard views made it the perfect place to unwind.

This family-owned winery offers a delightful tasting experience, showcasing a range of varietals. Kinross is a cellar door for five excellent wine makers: Coal Pit, Valli, Hawkhead, Wild Irishman and Kinross. We love the relaxed vibe here, especially while enjoying locally sourced plates that complement the wines beautifully. Our personal favourite is their Truffle Fungi pizza, it is a must try! With breathtaking views of the vineyards and mountains, Kinross is the ideal spot to unwind and savour the essence of Central Otago’s winemaking heritage.

Getting there

If you don’t have a car or want to elevate your experience, I highly recommend joining a wine tour for the full adventure! We recently tried the Hop On Hop Off bus tour, and it was such a fantastic way to soak in the scenery without the stress of driving. You get to explore multiple wineries at your own pace, allowing you to linger over tastings and really savour each stop. For a more active outing, Around the Basin offers guided bike tours that let you pedal through the stunning landscapes between vineyards. The fresh air and breathtaking views made the experience unforgettable! Whichever option you choose, both promise a delightful way to immerse yourself in the charm of Queenstown and Arrowtown’s wine scene.
